During Monday’s Bridgeport Development Authority meeting, Community Development Director Andrea Kerr told those gathered that Community Care of West Virginia (CCWV) was in the midst of a $2.25 million renovation their building at Charles Pointe. On January 5 of this year, they were the sole bidder for the building.
They will eventually be in their new structure, which is the former Greater Bridgeport Convention and Visitors Bureau building. The building sits on a 2.06-acre parcel at Charles Pointe and is near the main entrance.
According to plans submitted to the city, the renovation is 16,528 square feet. The actual size of the building is 23,379 square feet. Kerr said the entire building will be redone.
The renovation includes new offices for various medical practitioners, nursing stations, therapy rooms, space to treat trauma, examination space, lab rooms, and rooms for administrative staff among others. The lobby also will be redone.
“I don’t believe they’re doing anything with the unfinished space (on the first floor),” Kerr said.
The building also was home to Fairmont State University, which occupied the entire second floor for several years. The Mountain East Conference also called the building home, asdid Connect-Bridgeport. Fairmont State and the MEC left shortly after the arrival of COVID.
CCWV is a non-profit corporation, a federally qualified health center, which manages primary healthcare centers throughout North Central West Virginia and beyond. It began in Rock Cave and has more than 15 clinics in North Central West Virginia.
The corporation offers primary care services, behavioral health services, pharmacy services, urgent care services, and more. In January, Parker pointed out that CCWV has more than 50 school-based health centers throughout the region, including Harrison County. Primary care and behavioral health services are currently being offered at the White Oaks site.
Harrison, Lewis, Upshur, Pocahontas, Greenbrier, Randolph, and Clay are among the counties where CCWV has a presence. While the new building will be key, it will not be CCWV’s new headquarters. The main presence, Parker said, will remain in Upshur County.
There will be roughly 40 employees in the building, Parker said earlier this year. There are, at last count according to Parker, 546 employees under the CCWV umbrella.
The Thrasher Group is the lead engineer on the project. Commercial Builders is the general contractor.
