Position Title: Dental Hygienist
Position Type: Full-time
Location: Positions available in Harrison County, Upshur County, Clay County, Braxton County
Department: School Based Health
Work Hours: 40 hours per week
Salary: Based upon qualifications
Clean teeth and examine oral areas, head, and neck for signs of oral disease. May educate children on oral hygiene and apply fluoride or sealants.
Position Responsibilities/ Essential Duties:
•Clean calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums,
using dental instruments. Complete assessment, prophylaxis, fluoride varnish, and record all
findings for dentist review.
•Feel lymph nodes under child’s chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate
presence of oral cancer.
•Examine gums, using probes, to locate periodontal recessed gums and signs of gum disease.
•Apply fluorides and other cavity preventing agents to arrest dental decay. Assess the need and
acceptability of sealants. Apply sealants to eligible children. Perform long-term sealant
•Maintain communication with collaborating dentist and carry out orders accurately, directly and

child’s identified problem/needs. Provide clinical services and health education to improve and
maintain oral health of school children.
•Assist dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies.
•Perform delegated independent dental assisting functions using established procedures,
policies, guidelines, and standards.
•Order and maintain dental supplies and through ongoing inventory management efforts.
•Document pertinent observation and intervention on appropriate record. Maintain all
documents, forms and records for all children served.
•Maintain and coordinate communication among child, parent/legal guardian, staff, and dentist
as evidenced within medical record, child, and health care team feedback.
•Effectively communicate child’s changing needs and plan of care among staff members.
•Report child’s needs/problems and observations regarding their condition to the child’s legal
guardian or parent.
Position Responsibilities/ Other Duties:
•Perform selected tasks related to patient care and the patient's environment in a safe manner.
•Contribute to the development of the patient/significant other plan of care based on the
identified patient problems/needs.
•Assist in assuring that effective communication exists with patient/significant other as reflected
in the plan of care.
•Work collaboratively with other members of the care team in coordination of the patient's care
as evidenced by other department feedback.
•Use available written materials specific to patient condition or disease.
•Utilize appropriate teaching methods such as one-on-one and group instruction, demonstration,

•Participate in staff development programs and staff meetings.
•Submit Public Health Setting report to the West Virginia Board of Dentistry.
•Attend scheduled staff meetings and is responsible for information discussed.

1. Bachelor degree in in Dental Hygiene having successfully completed four academic years of
pre-professional and professional study in an accredited college or university approved by the
Commission on Accreditation of Dental and Dental Auxiliary Educational Programs of the
American Dental Association.
1. Active West Virginia Dental Hygienist license
2. Active Public Health Hygienist designation issued by the West Virginia Board of Dentistry
1. At least two years’ experience required.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
1. Frequent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting, bending and supporting
2. Incumbent will be required to transport various portable dental equipment and supplies to
various CCWV school based health locations. Must be able to life at least 35 pounds for routine
performance of essential functions.
